The catalogue raisonnés by Carola Giediion-Welcker (1957), Eduard Trier (1968), Ionel Jianou (1973) and the critical inventory of Hans Arp’s casts by Arie Hartog and Kai Fischer (2012) form the core of the online database. Works from Stefanie Poley’s catalogue raisonné (1978) are only included if their authorship has been verified and if Arp considered them to be finished works of art.
Entries on individual works will include the number of known plaster casts of the sculpture at hand. The accompanying legend will clarify the status of each cast.
The data on the respective cast may be found in the single entries. Information on the participating foundries and sculptors is also included.
The dimensions of the works are largely taken directly from the aforementioned catalogue raisonnés.
Only authorized plasters that fit the following criteria are included in the database: a) the repository must be named in the catalogue raisonné; b) the plaster was exhibited during Arp’s lifetime or personally given to a friend; c) Marguerite Arp-Hagenbach donated the plaster from Arp’s estate to a public collection. Arp neither created nor intended many of the extant plasters as authorized works of art. These are classified in the database as working versions until their status is fully clarified. This classification also applies to the plaster versions that Stefanie Poley documented in her catalogue raisonné of Arp’s late works as well as to the plaster cast that are in the Stiftung Arp e.V.’s holdings. The Stiftung Arp e.V. states explicitly that the working models indicated in grey in the database are not independent works by Arp and that they can not be sold on the art market.
The Stiftung Arp e.V., Berlin/Rolandseck holds several works by Arp in plaster that have been documented only cursorily in the literature, if at all. Stefanie Poley did not account for them, perhaps because they were not housed in Arp’s studio when she conducted her inventory. In addition, it possesses many plasters that Poley did include, but that are not currently published in the database. A research project will be undertaken in the coming years to clarify the authorship of these works once and for all. Once this research is complete, these works will also be made public in the database.
Authorized Status
Authorized. The work is included in one of the following catalogue raisonnés: Carola Giedion-Welcker/Marguerite Arp-Hagenbach of 1956, Eduard Trier/Francois Arp of 1968 (including the addendum), or Ionel Jinaou of 1973.
Only those works from Stefanie Poley’s catalogue raisonné (1978) that were either authorized by Marguerite Arp-Hagenbach or that she bequeathed to museums are included in the database. Furthermore, plasters that Marguerite Arp-Hagenbach included in her official list are authorized, as are additional plasters and models for which there is a certificate signed by Marguerite Arp-Hagenbach or Francois Arp.
Authorized works also include those that Arp personally gave as presents or that were shown as independent works of art during his lifetime (and not as models for casts), as are those that Marguerite Arp-Hagenbach donated from the estate to public collections and museums.
Undetermined Status
The status of the work has not yet been clarified. A definitive attribution (edition number) cannot yet be made.
Unauthorized Status
Authorship cannot be verified by the copyright owner.
Forgeries and copies of Hans Arp’s works are not included in the database.
