RESEARCH

Sophie Taeuber-Arp Research Project (STARP)

The Sophie Taeuber-Arp Research Project has been launched in summer 2020. The website will compile extensive information and current research on the life and work of Sophie Taeuber-Arp in a digital format available to experts and the interested public. The project’s focus is the online catalogue raisonné of the artist’s complete work. This is the first time that Taeuber-Arp’s significant oeuvre is being documented in a comprehensive, scholarly manner. The website and the in-progress catalogue raisonné will be expanded and updated continuously.

The studio practice of Hans Arp

Since 2020, the Stiftung Arp e.V. began researching its extensive collection of plasters from Hans Arp’s studio. The artist worked out the forms of his sculptures in plaster, sanding them with files, cutting them into pieces with saws, and continually rearranging existing forms into new ones. On the one hand, the plasters were used to produce bronzes. On the other, they formed the basis of an artistic process that generated endlessly new variations on a figure. The project centers on the question of the “biography” of the individual plasters, Hans Arp’s artistic processes, and the casting process both during the artist’s lifetime as well as after his death. The findings will be presented in the exhibition The Arp Company. The Cosmos of Forms and Studio Practice at the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus, Bremen, November 6, 2022 – January 29, 2023.
