ŒUVRE
Sophie Taueber-Arp was one of the most innovative female artists in the first half of the twentieth century. She thought that the arts should permeate all aspects of life, and her oeuvre challenges conventional divisions between fine and applied arts. In her works of geometric abstraction, she developed varied compositions based on the horizontal and vertical arrangement of the square and the rectangle. Any references to figures and representational elements in her work are purely symbolic. In her late work, she experimented more with rhythmic, pulsating lines. She also expanded the scope of interior design by creating and designing beadwork, tapestries, furniture and interiors. Additionally, she made paintings, drawings, collages and a few sculptures. The Stiftung Arp e.V. has a comprehensive collection of Sophie Taeuber-Arp’s work.
