Hans Arp & Contemporary Art

New York University, New York, October 30 and 31, 2025

Hans Arp was a leading member of the twentieth-century avant-garde. By forging international connections, he shaped pivotal movements, including Zürich Dada and Paris Surrealism. Then, as a key figure in pstwar European modernism, he archieved global recognition for his extensive multimedia oeuvre. Arp’s formal language and process-oriented thinking resonate on today’s global art scene. Contemporary artists across continents experiment with fluid forms and the role of chance  the artistic process, likewise abandoning media hierachies. This conference, therefore, explores how contemporary artists adapt and reinterpret Arp’s artistic principles in various cultural contexts.

A Stiftung Arp e.V. conference in collaboration with the Department of Art History and the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.
